Now, casino workers at casinos all across the country have been organized by unions, and the results are continuing to make the workplace a better environment for casino workers. The latest victory came in East Chicago late this past week.
On Thursday, UNITE HERE Local 1 reached an agreement with Ameristar Casino that will ensure that there will be a limit on part-time employer hirings and current employees will receive a retroactive pay raise. Retirement benefits are also now available for the workers, something that has never been offered before.
The contract that was agreed upon is for three years, starting back on October 31st, 2009, and running through October 31st, 2012. It is likely that by that time, a long term deal may be reached between the casino and the union that represents around 200 employees at Ameristar.
"It has been a long process and we are happy that we have reached an agreement that is mutually beneficial and consistent with our desire to take care of all of our valued team members," said Spokeswoman Roxann Kinkade of Ameristar Casinos Inc. "We look forward to continuing to work with the union and all of our team members as we focus on what we do best, which is delivering exceptional service to our guests."
In the past decade many states have turned to casino gambling as a way to deal with the economic difficulties from the recession. Budget deficits have been slashed due to the tax revenue from casino gambling, and thousands of jobs have become available as casinos have opened across the country.
