Penn National Gaming gets ready to open Morgantown casino

When customers first enter the Hollywood Casino Morgantown, they will be greeted by a colorful, wide open room that will engulf their senses.

Bright slot machines chime and blink throughout the casino floor while large screens on the wall show the latest sporting events.

After the grand opening on Wednesday, Penn National Gaming hopes the addition of hundreds of gaming enthusiasts will create a vibe that will resonate with its customers.

“When you come into the property you have this incredible visual, where you have the pit, flames on either side by the slot parlors and the huge screens,” said Marc Guastella, the casino’s general manager. “We want all those senses to be awakened: the visuals, the sounds, the smells, everything. The way this is laid out appeals to all of that.”

On Friday morning, save for some construction workers and vendors concentrating on last-minute touches, Penn National gave members of the media a tour of the completed Caernarvon Township casino that was first proposed in 2018 after the company won the Category 4 license for the area.

Construction had been held up for months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Wyomissing-based company’s 44th casino, located just 17 miles from headquarters, will feature the gaming industry’s latest innovations and some unique additions Penn National officials say will attract gamers in an increasingly crowded market.

“Seeing this property grow in the last few months — the last few years frankly — has been incredible,” Guastella said. “I remember standing here when it was just a metal frame. And standing here and seeing everything that’s in this building is truly remarkable. It’s a testament to our incredible team and our incredible company.”

Features

The $111 million facility near Route 10, Interstate 176 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike sits on a 36-acre plot that was originally slated to have a shopping center.

The 81,425-square-foot building will have 750 slot machines and 28 table games plus room for 10 more table games, which is the limit allowed for a Category 4 license. There will also be two hybrid games where players can wager with a live feed from table games.

Besides gaming, the casino will offer a Barstool Sportsbook along with Red Lotus Asian Kitchen and a branch of Tony Luke’s, the iconic Philadelphia cheesesteak stand.

A giant bar just off the middle of the gaming floor, named Bar 76, will feature several local craft beers, including Hollywood Haze a special India pale ale that is made by Lancaster Brewing Co. Other regional brands include Troegs, Victory and Tattered Flag.

Seating for the bar and Tony Luke’s can accommodate about 100 diners. Red Lotus is located on the other side of the floor, adjacent to six Asian-themed table games.

“This bar is rather big, but we want this because it’s the center meeting point,” Guastella said.

The Barstool Sportsbook will have an old-school stadium theme with three eye-catching features besides an area where customers can wager on their favorite teams.

Four jumbotrons are being installed above the bar area that will show the top sporting events. Fans can watch the events while sitting on high school-style bleachers (that can be pushed back into the wall). The sportsbook itself is behind the bleachers.

“It is our flagship food and beverage and entertainment outlet,” Guastella said. “It’s one of a kind in this area. We anticipate the venue to be a hit in the market.”

Guest comforts

One of the first things regular visitors to casinos may notice is the lack of cigarette and cigar smoke on the main gaming floor and around the restaurants. Smoking is prohibited in those areas.

But for those who like to smoke while playing the slots, there’s a place to go. An area for smokers to play has been built off the main casino floor and will feature 160 slot machines.

The room has windows on three sides that will remain open year round for air circulation. Heaters in the ceiling will keep customers warm during the winter. A recent storm that featured 55 mph winds resulted in no water getting inside.

An additional smoking lounge that features the same climate controls but no games is on the other side of the building.

Erin Chamberlin, Penn National’s senior vice president, regional operations, said that being able to build from the ground up allowed the company to add the separate rooms. The company has used such smoking areas at its facilities in Ohio.

“As we were thinking about things we wanted to take advantage of, this indoor-outdoor gaming seemed really appealing to us,” Chamberlin said. “It’s an interesting test, opening up without any smoking on the main gaming floor and limiting it to an outdoor area. Every market is a little bit different, but we are cautiously optimistic that it will be well-received in our Morgantown property. We’re ready and willing to get guests’ feedback.”

Another innovative feature will be Penn National’s new 3C technology, which allows customers to have a cardless, cashless and contactless experience that is already being used at Hollywood Casinos in Pennsylvania.

“We’re offering cashless technology, which is really cutting edge,” Guastella said “We’ve positioned this property as the casino of the future.”

Guests can download a “wallet” to their cellphones that can interact with machines in the casino to upload funds.

The phone can then download funds to slot machines and table games. Any leftover funds or winnings are transferred back to the phone when the player is finished.

The casino will also accept traditional cash along with tickets and chips at the tables.

The casino will be open 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. on other days.
