Casino to be assessed in hope of saving jobs

Christchurch Casino says there has been minimal earthquake damage to its building and it will take about a month to fix.
Some 500 workers have until Tuesday to decide whether to take four weeks' redundancy pay or keep their jobs and go on leave without pay until the
Civil Defence says it will allow builders into the building to assess how long it will take to repair the damage and get the casino operating.
Christchurch Casino chief executive Brett Anderson told Checkpoint he hopes engineers and construction workers will be able to enter the building on Tuesday to assess the damage.
Mr Anderson says initial engineering reports do not indicate serious damage and he hopes to have the casino open in one to two months.
The Copthorne Hotel near-by had been regarded as a safety threat, but this has been stabilised so the assessment can go ahead.
