Mark Hackel said he plans to reach out to local communities to see who might be interested. A new casino could require the approval of Michigan voters, as well as other state or federal approval, depending on details of how it might be run. There already is gambling at casinos in nearby Detroit.
"Can you imagine the summertime events that could be put on by having a marina-casino? It would truly transform that lakefront," he told radio station WWJ.
The project also could include a hotel, Hackel said, and he would like to use part of the money generated by such a project for cleaning up Lake St. Clair.
The idea for a marina-casino is getting mixed reviews.
"No, we don't need any casinos," said Joe Ramsey of Sterling Heights. "People who go to casinos have a problem losing money. That's a bad idea."
Other area residents, however, like the idea.
"I've lived here for 40 years," Tracy Peltier said. "We need something on this waterfront. Get rid of this rubbish. It'd be great."
Hackel said the county already is taking steps to get money to improve the Clinton River, and he also would like to see privately owned canoe liveries and riverfront campgrounds.
