He showed up at the casino, which is housed in the second largest hotel in the world, as Paul. He told them he was a reality show contestant where two people compete for a job. Donning a thick wig and a pair of glasses,
Day two took him to the front desk to work as an agent. Working with Angelina, a 3 ½ year employee, brought back some good memories since this is where his roots are. The MGM Grand checks in up to 2,200 customers a day so he understood these people are the front lines of the company. His first check in got him frozen out of the computer. Paul was not too impressed with the amount of time it took to prepare keycards and get the customers checked in. He was pretty surprised that the recent upgrade has actually slowed the check in process. “Thanks for your patience,” became the mantra of the night. Angelina got the permission of her boss, and took Pual with her, to take a break. Oops, she went to the valet area to take a smoke. They were supposed to go out back, but instead they stood out there in their uniforms with name tags with butts everywhere on the ground. She said they went in that area because when things are busy there’s no time to go anywhere else. Angelina said she would like to move her and her kids out of Colorado.
Working on the floor as a roulette dealer, “Paul” learned the ropes under Donn, a Vietnam Vet from Nebraska. After a quick lesson on how the game works and how it pays out. Paul was really confused, understandably, on the workings. His first roll was in the midst of a live game and it wasn’t real successful. At one point the ball actually flipped out of the spinner. Donn taught him that putting your hands inside your pockets would get a person fired. Paul broke every rule, but Donn was there to help him out. He went on to describe one of the biggest problems at the table as being smoke from cigars and cigarettes. He indicated that the present system isn’t working very well. Scott recognized that the employees are what makes the business and he wants to see their needs being met.
His next stop in the undercover business took him to Sandy who helped him to be a GSR, Guest Service Representative, in the slot department. GSR’s help introduce the customer’s to the new loyalty program. His first observation was the nasty carpet. His main job was to keep the space cleaned up and try to introduce the new player’s card, M Life. She said to set a goal of giving out 10 cards a day. Paul thought 10 cards a day should be a piece of cake, since it’s free, but realized that wasn’t the case. His first attempt got shot down, as did his next several attempts. Sandy told “Paul” she’d never personally gotten that many rejections in one day! He realized there needed to be a better incentive program for the GSR’s to push these M Life cards. Trying to make it personal, Scott took time to get to know Sandy. She described taking flowers each Monday to a nursing home to help brighten up the residents lives. She actually took “Paul” with her to the nursing home on their break, delivering flowers to the home. As the sun set, they worked together to make the day of the residents at the nursing home. As Sandy described taking in the donated flowers, sometimes with her grandchildren, you could see Scott’s wheels turning.
He got a surprise visit from his kids, wife, and dog. They brought some burgers and enjoyed a family meal together. He admitted he’s worked harder this week more than he ever has. Discussing the need for his family to do community service, his kids didn’t seem to receptive about it.
For the big reveal, Scott had the employees come up to a suite to cast their votes about the new employees. They got the surprise of their life when they discovered that Paul was actually Scott.
The reveal started with Sandy. She said “Paul” cleaned up really well. Scott recognized her dedication and hard work and asked if he and his family could help her at the nursing home and that he wanted the MGM to help anyway they could . He also offered her an all-expenses paid cruise to anywhere she wanted for her and her husband. His last token of gratitude came in the form of a donation for $5,000 to the charity of her choice. Angelina’s initial reaction was panic because she recognized she could have acted in a more professional way. Scott said he didn’t hold her responsible for the whole smoke break fiasco, but he did express disappointment and said he would be addressing the problem of where to take a break along with fixing the check in problem with the computers. His gift to her was a paid week off to take an all-expenses paid romantic getaway with her husband. Next Scott recognized the dealer’s needs for better ventilation. In discussing things with Don, the blackjack dealer, Scott promised each table would be equipped with two or three fans until they could figure out a way to permanently fix the problem. He went on to give Don a really awesome gift. He gave him an autographed helmet from Don’s favorite college team, the Oklahoma Sooners, and then offered to fly in his two brothers to go watch the game in a box office. His last gift to Don was the most meaningful. On behalf of Don, MGM wanted to donate $5,000 to a Vietnam Veterans organization. This man is the most selfless man I’ve seen on this show. His reactions were , “The dealers will like that. My brothers will love it. It’s nice to know we’re not forgotten (with regard to the Vets). I’ll be a hero.” The most emotional reveal came during Scott’s visit with Eddy. When Scott said he was giving Eddy $10,000 because he’s always giving, Eddy responded, “You don’t have to do that. Seriously, everything is fine.” Going on, Scott said Dana White, the president of UFC, wanted to fly Eddy and his five boys out to a UFC event and give them all the VIP treatment.
A follow-up revealed Sandy was now serving flowers to two nursing homes thanks to the MGM’s donation, Eddie was preparing to go see a fight with his boys before his son headed to the Air Force, Angelina is now smoking in a different area, and Scott went with Donn to a Veteran’s support meeting and gave them $5,000 in Donn’s honor.
Mr. Sibella, on behalf of the Vegas nursing homes and the Vets in America, MGBY. Oh yeah, that means, May God Bless You! Thanks!
