Grand Falls will become the new casino on the block when it opens for the first time. The casino announced late this past week that construction on the facility is about one month ahead of schedule. That would make the opening of the casino in late May.
"Everything is good right now," said Joe Massa, CEO of the Grand Falls Casino and Resort. "It's 110 miles an hour in a 60 miles an hour zone. We're really ramping up. We're hiring our casino staff now. We've hired ten directors, they're on board as we speak and within the next few weeks we'll start hiring managers."
The opening could not come at a better time for Iowa. Governor Terry Branstad is proposing that the tax rate for casinos be raised from twenty-two percent to thirty-six percent. The casinos have already come out against the plan, although they would receive benefits on the back end from a corporate tax cut.
Iowa is attempting to hold off competition from neighboring states, and the Grand Falls Casino will help in that regard. The casino will be located along the Iowa, South Dakota border. Originally, the casino was not expected to be opened until June.
The hiring process should help with the unemployment rate in Iowa. In April, job fairs are scheduled that will bring employment opportunities to over 600 workers. Neighboring businesses also stand to prosper economically from the addition of the new casino. Thousands of patrons will be coming through the casino on a weekly basis.
