Gaming commission to make casino decision next week - Southeast Missourian

E-mail Print PDF
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The wait is nearly over.

The Missouri Gaming Commission announced Wednesday that it will decide on Dec. 1 who, if anyone, will get the state's last gambling license. That means Cape Girardeau residents who voted to approve a $125 million casino earlier this month will find out next week whether a casino will be constructed here, somewhere else or not at

all.

"The commission doesn't actually issue a license until the casino's doors open," said commission spokeswoman LeAnn McCarthy. "So what the commission will be doing is selecting an applicant for priority. At the meeting, there will be discussion among the commissioners and then they'll make their decision."

The decision will allow the company selected to begin construction on its casino. In Cape Girardeau, Isle of Capri has proposed to build a $125 million casino in near the city's downtown on North Main Street. Other candidates include Casino Celebration in St. Louis and Paragon Casino in Sugar Creek near Kansas City.

Commission chairman Jim Mathewson has said all along that the commission could also choose not to grant a 13th license if it feels it is unwarranted.
