4th Rapid City casino robbed in week's time - PlainsDaily.com

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A rash of robberies has casino workers in Rapid City on edge, and police say solving the crimes is their top priority. Four holdups have
occurred in a week's time. The latest was Saturday night at a Happy Jack's Casino. A masked man assaulted the clerk and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The crimes started on Nov. 14 at Joker's Casino, followed by robberies last Wednesday at a Happy Jacks and Thursday at another Happy Jacks. Police Chief Steve Allender told the Rapid City Journal that authorities do not yet know if the robberies are related.

"It's a little scary," said Michelle Terkildsen, a cashier at Queen of Hearts Casino. "I'm kind of dreading the nights I have to work."

Casinos across the city have stepped up security measures, including keeping less money on the premises, keeping doors locked during business hours and having employees check customers into the building.

There was no weapon displayed in the the weekend robbery. In the holdup last Thursday, authorities said, the suspect was a masked person wearing "black ninja-type clothing" and brandishing a sword. The first two robberies involved men with knives.

A $10,000 reward is posted for information leading to a conviction in the robberies.

"Someone out there has probably seen something or somebody," Allender said. "They should know that the $10,000 reward is out there for information leading to an arrest. It's a good time to turn in your ex-boyfriend or neighbor to get this thing under control."

The chief called the rash of robberies in such short a time "troubling."

"It's our No. 1 investigative priority," he said. "Everybody in the community wants to know why this is happening."
