Three lobbyists, two casino owners, four state senators, an attorney, and a spokesman for a casino owner were all indicted.
The probe came about when the possibility of corruption was considered in Alabama’s legislature. All throughout 2010, the gambling industry in Alabama has been in a tumult. Governor Riley’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling had been running rampant through the state, shutting down the different bingo halls in the state.
Riley’s assertion is that the bingo machines are actually Vegas style slot games. These slot games are illegal in Alabama. A bill had passed the state Senate earlier this year, but the House version was shot down.
A 12th defendant, according to federal authorities, had plead guilty to conspiracy.
One of the main opponents to USA online gambling also hails from Alabama. Senator Spencer Bacchus (R – AL) is one of the main opponents to online gambling in the United States, especially USA online sportsbooks.
