On Friday, those gamblers were ecstatic that the popular form of gambling had returned. The Jacks or Better casino ship set sail for the first time Friday evening, and 300 guests were on board to welcome back casino gambling.
"We have land-based casinos, but nothing compares to being able to get out on the water, away from civilization, and enjoying some casino games," said Mark Bennett. "I came tonight with a few friends to check out the boat, and we definitely will be coming back again sometime soon."
One of the major advantages of bringing the cruise gambling back to Jacksonville is the boost it will give to the unemployed. Over 100 employees have already been hired to help operate the gambling ship, and others may be added as needed. The ship will also pump money into the local economy through tax revenue.
The cruise ship is able to handle up to 500 passengers at a time. Mayport Village is the port where the ship docks, and the local residents are mixed on the new gambling. Sun Cruz had run gambling cruises out of the port until last year when the company went bankrupt. The Sun Cruz ships brought much business to neighboring businesses, something the city hopes happens again with the new ships.
Another advantage that the Jacks or Better ship has is the shape the ship is in. The Sun Cruz ships were old and were not kept up, and those such as Bennett that were on the ship Friday claim that the Jacks or Better is much better than the older ships Jacksonville residents had become accustomed to.
