EDMONTON — Two men have been found guilty of second-degree murder and assault with a weapon for a shooting outside an Edmonton casino that left one person dead and another injured.
Court of Queen's Bench Justice Paul Belzil gave his decision Friday to a courtroom packed with members of the Somali-Canadian community, of which the victim, Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, was a member.
The
During the trial, court heard a fight erupted inside a lounge at the River Cree Casino on Aug. 30, 2008, between Ibrahim and his friends, and Reid and Brown and their friends.
Reid and Brown took several punches during the fight, which Belzil said provided them with motivation for the shooting, since they were looking for payback.
The shooting occurred minutes later outside the casino where a large group had gathered. Forensic evidence presented during the trial showed Ibrahim had been hit with bullets from two guns.
Belzil accepted arguments from the Crown prosecutor that Reid and Brown were the shooters.
Ibrahim's mother quietly hugged her supporters after the verdict was announced.
