Second suspect arrested in casino crime spree - Rapid City Journal

E-mail Print PDF

Authorities arrested two more men in connection with last week's casino robberies Wednesday, but the investigation is not over.

"We're investigating other leads," Rapid City police Lt. Tom Vlieger said. "Further charges could be coming."

Over the course of six days, four local video lottery casinos were robbed by men

brandishing knives and in one case a sword.

The first arrest was made Monday night when 50-year-old Daniel Gillen of Rapid City was taken into custody.

Joshua Bourne, 23, of Box Elder was arrested without incident Wednesday afternoon in Box Elder.

Authorities also arrested Brian Joseph Walker, 29, of Rapid City at the Pennington County Jail where he is being held on unrelated charges. Walker is charged with one count of robbery, but additional charges are pending, according to police.

Bourne and Gillen are charged in connection with the first holdup that happened at Joker's Casino on Mount Rushmore Road on Nov. 14.

All three men are linked to the robbery at Happy Jack's Casino on Mount Rushmore Road on Nov. 17.

The next day, a Happy Jack's Casino on Cambell Street was robbed by a man dressed like a ninja and brandishing a sword. The fourth casino hit was a Happy Jack's on Timmons Boulevard on Nov. 20.

Bourne and Gillen are charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery.

Bourne has an additional charge for witness tampering.

Gillen also faces charges for the unauthorized manufacturing of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance.

Gillen learned Wednesday that if convicted of all the charges against him, he could face a 100-year prison sentence.

Gillen made his initial court appearance via video from the Pennington County Jail Wednesday.

When asked if he wanted to speak with an attorney, Gillen responded: "I think I better."

During Gillen's court appearance, Pennington County deputy state's attorney Sarah Morrison said Gillen had admitted driving the get-away car used in the two robberies.

Bond for Gillen and Bourne is set at $500,000.
