Gov.-elect Andrew Cuomo - who is still the state's top legal representative - voiced his support this morning for Gov. Paterson's deal with a Wisconsin-based Indian tribe to develop a casino in Sullivan County.
"I'm representing the governor in this agreement," the attorney general told reporters this morning. "I don't believe there will be any
Cuomo added: "There's only one governor at a time. This is David Paterson's position and I support him in it."
Paterson, meanwhile, formally announced the deal with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Band of Mohican Indians today. The governor stopped in Madison County this morning to sign a an agreement with the tribe settling a decades-old land dispute in that county and then headed to Sullivan County to announce the casino development deal.
The agreements must now be approved by the U.S. Department of the Interior - a step which is far from certain given the federal government's previous reluctance to sign off on casinos on properties located outside a tribe's traditional land.
A spokeswoman for the Interior Department declined to comment this afternoon.
