WinStar and Choctaw, two of the most popular gambling and entertainment destinations for North Texans, will temporarily close their Oklahoma casinos to reduce the potential spread of coronavirus.
WinStar is closing its casino, restaurants and stores in Thackerville through March 31. Choctaw is shutting down its Durant casino and resort, travel plaza gaming locations and concert venues for an unspecified period.
Six casinos in Shreveport-Bossier City, La., another popular destination for North Texans, also are closing for two weeks, beginning Tuesday morning, according to KSLA-TV. Those casinos are Sam’s Town, Eldorado, Boomtown, Diamondjacks, Horseshoe and Margaritaville.
WinStar said in a statement Monday that the safety of patrons and employees is of “paramount importance.”
“While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at WinStar ... we have determined it is in the best interest of our patrons and employees to temporarily close the casino, all retail stores and all casino restaurants in accordance with health official directives discouraging mass gatherings of 50 people or more to slow the transmission of this virus,” WinStar said.
The Choctaw Nation, which operates its namesake resort about 90 minutes north of Dallas, said it will provide updates on its website and social media channels “given how quickly this situation is evolving.”
WinStar, operated by the Chickasaw Nation, will keep its 1,400-room casino hotel open, as well as an RV park, golf club and golf academy. A cafe inside the hotel also will remain open but will limit guests to no more than 50 at a time.
WinStar earlier had delayed or canceled concerts through March at its 3,500-seat entertainment venue. Choctaw postponed all of its planned concerts through April 3.
WinStar, located on Interstate 35 just north of the Texas-Oklahoma border, and Choctaw both draw heavily from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It’s estimated that Texans spend $2.5 billion a year at out-of-state casinos.
Choctaw last year broke ground on a major expansion project to add 1,000 hotel rooms, expand its gaming floor and include new amenities such as pools, retail space, entertainment options and dining venues.
