Despite the apparent victory of a ballot initiative that would approve a casino in Oxford County, Maine, a group in the state still plans to fight on in their attempts to prevent the casino from being built.
Casinos No!, a political action committee that opposed the initiative, has said that they would ask for a recount of Tuesday’s vote that approved the proposed casino.
If a recount does not prove fruitful, it may not be the final nail in the coffin for the group. Spokesperson Dennis Bailey has said that Casinos No! might also challenge the casino on legal grounds.
"I don't think you can write a public law for private gain," Bailey said in an interview with the Portland Press Herald.
The ballot initiative asked voters to authorize Black Bear Entertainment to build a casino in Oxford County, at an estimated cost of $165 million. One of the more controversial provisions in the measure was a clause that would prevent any other casinos from being built within a 100-mile radius.
Even with the casino seemingly having been approved by Maine voters, there are still questions that remain about the facility. Black Bear Entertainment has yet to choose a site for the casino and proposed resort. Investors with the group have said that the site could be picked as early as this month, with construction beginning as soon as next summer.
