Cordish Chairman David Cordish said at a news conference at his downtown Baltimore office that he wants to "expedite" development of the 4,750-machine slots parlor, a process that will include temporary building that would likely hold about 2,000 slot machines and could operating in as little as five months.
"We are very, very interested in looking at every possible way to expedite this casino," said Cordish. "It's full speed ahead on the development. We will expedite a temporary casino, but we will not let it any way interfere with the [permanent casino]."
But Cordish cautioned that the company was still going through the permitting process with Anne Arundel County officials, who have said they expect Cordish would have a building permit for its casino by January. A temporary casino would require a separate approval process.
State regulators have said they would welcome plans from Cordish for a temporary casino, an option under state law.
Joseph Weinberg, a principle at Cordish, said building a temporary casino in five months would be "achievable," and the building would be equipped with the same basic amenities of the permanent structure, including heat and air conditioning, restrooms and restaurants.
"You wouldn't know you're in a temporary facility," Weinberg said. "This is not the first time we've done this."
