Atlantic City casino revenue drops by 2.7 percent | Breaking News

ATLANTIC CITY — The resort’s casino industry saw gambling revenue decrease by 2.7 percent in July compared with a year ago, according to state gambling figures released Monday afternoon.

Overall casino gambling revenue, including internet gambling, totaled $267.8 million, compared with $275.2 in July 2016, according to the figures. The numbers include comparisons to when the shuttered Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort was open.

If you take the Taj Mahal out of the equation, the city’s seven remaining casinos saw their overall gambling revenues, including internet gambling, increase by 3.9 percent. The remaining casinos took in $267.8 million last month compared with $257.7 million in July 2016.

“While there are fluctuations in monthly revenue, it is encouraging that Atlantic City’s current operators’ casino win figures are up nearly 10 percent for the year so far, illustrating that overall, there is continued stabilization in the industry,” said David Rebuck, director of the state Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Internet gambling grew by 18.5 percent. Revenues totaled about $18.5 million in July compared with $17.3 million a year ago.

“Stuffing state and local coffers with over $100 million in tax revenue (since it was approved in November 2013) certainly drops the curtain on any lingering revenue concerns,” said Steve Ruddock, lead analyst for PlayNJ.com. “While states such as Pennsylvania drag their feet on legalizing online gaming, companies of all stripes are flocking to the Jersey Shore to grab a piece of the online gaming action.”

Since it was approved, internet gambling has generated more than $619 million in revenue, according to PlayNJ, an internet gambling advocacy group.

“It is clear that business is building for the seven operating casinos, and I am optimistic it will continue to grow in the months ahead,” said Matthew B. Levinson, chairman and CEO of the state Casino Control Commission. “Atlantic City’s seven operating casinos won 3.9 percent more last month than in July 2016 — even though it had one less weekend day.”
