TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) – A casino planned for the Oklahoma Panhandle could be a game changer for that business in this state.
The Shawnee Nation plans to invest $25 million in the Golden Mesa Casino in Guymon.
The project is controversial because it would be located 366-miles from the tribe’s headquarters in Miami, Oklahoma.
State Republic State Senator Bryce Marlatt of Woodward is raising questions about the plan because it is going to be built on land that is not traditional tribal property.
He said the state might need to take another look, at allowing casinos on non-tribal land.
Marlatt also said it would be a bad president and it raises questions about the tribes keeping the exclusive right to gambling in this state.
If Oklahoma allowed others to invest in the gaming business, it would be a radical change to the status quo and have huge financial implications.
Currently, there are at least 100 casinos in Oklahoma and they are all operated by Indian tribes.
The Golden Mesa Casino would be built in an area that doesn’t have much population, but it would attract customers from the states that surround the Oklahoma Panhandle.
The casino would cover 42,000 square feet and provide 175 jobs.
