County Slots Vote Has Big Implications For Md.
HANOVER, Md. (AP) ― Maryland's largest proposed casino is in the hands of Anne Arundel County voters, who are weighing huge financial implications for the state and county in a referendum. The casino proposed by Baltimore-based Cordish Cos. could hold as many as 4,750 slot machines next to Arundel Mills Mall and could generate as much as $500 million a year. About $243 million of that would go to the state, and about $30 million would go to the county at a time when both face big budget deficits. The operator would get about one-third of the proceeds.
The ballot question, about a local zoning ordinance needed for the project, has prompted intense campaigning by both opponents and supporters who have spent millions on television ads and direct mail in an attempt to influence what could be a close vote.
