LAKESIDE, Calif. — Crews working to contain swaths of open terrain charred by a 170-acre wildfire near Barona Casino this week had the task more than two-thirds complete Friday.
As of late this morning, firefighters had the burn zone off Wildcat Canyon Road in the Lakeside area roughly 78 percent surrounded, according to Cal Fire.
The blaze erupted for unknown reasons near Akuunyaa Way shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday. The flames caused no reported structural damage while moving across brushy hillsides and ravines east of San Vicente Reservoir but left two of the personnel working the fire lines with minor injuries.
The blaze, dubbed the Wildcat Fire, threatened some back-country homes for a time, forced a closure of a stretch of Wildcat Canyon Road and prompted deputies to clear people out of seven homes in the southeastern reaches of Barona Indian Reservation as a precaution. The evacuees were advised to wait out the blaze at the nearby casino.
