When the Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted to award Wynn Resorts the state’s only Boston-area casino license last fall, it set a few conditions on the company. One of them asked Wynn to try again on the resort’s tower hotel design. Members of the gaming panel saw the previous design as boring.
Wynn executive Robert DeSalvio presented a first look at those new plans to the commission Thursday morning. The planned hotel, in color and in shape, is now reminiscent of other Wynn properties. It will stand the same height as the previous planned hotel would have, but it will be wider. About 100 more hotel rooms will be added as a result, bringing the total number of rooms to more than 600. The planned number of parking spots at the resort will drop from 3,700 t0 3,400.
DeSalvio said the company is working on new interior design and floor plans for the tower.

Gaming commissioners seemed impressed Thursday. Chairman Stephen Crosby likened the new tower to the Zakim Bridge in saying it could quickly become a standout site in the region. Commissioner Enrique Zuniga described the planned tower as “very iconic.”
Wynn finalized his purchase of the Everett casino land shortly after New Year’s. The plan has attracted its share of controversy, with three cities—Boston, Somerville, and Revere—suing the Gaming Commission over the decision to give Wynn the license. Mohegan Sun, which competed with Wynn for the Boston-area license, joined the Revere suit Wednesday.
Wynn presented two renderings—one during the day, one at night—on Thursday.
