(AP) - New York state has authorized up to four casino licenses to be divided among three regions: the Albany-Saratoga area, the Southern Tier-Finger Lakes region and the Catskills and mid-Hudson River Valley. CATSKILLS AND MID-HUDSON RIVER VALLEY: With its proximity to New York City, this region boasts the biggest plans and the most competition.
- Sterling Forest Resort, Orange County. By Genting Americas. Investment: $1.5 billion. Location: Tuxedo in Orange County, which applicant boasts is 35 miles from the George Washington Bridge. Sterling was the largest of the proposed projects. Genting Americas, a subsidiary of the Malaysian-based Genting Group, operates Resorts World Casino New York City. - Montreign Resort Casino, Sullivan County. By Empire Resorts. Investment: $1.1 billion or less. Location: Thompson, on the grounds of the old Concord hotel. Bidder has said the size and cost of the project would be dependent on the number and location of casino licenses issued. Empire currently operates through a subsidiary the nearby Monticello Casino & Raceway. - Caesars New York, Orange County. By Caesars Entertainment. Investment: $880 million. Location: In Woodbury, near the Thruway exit and Woodbury Commons shopping center. Proposed site is a roughly 50-mile drive from New York City. Applicant said project would include 300 luxury hotel rooms and 50 poker tables. - Resorts World Hudson Valley, Orange County. By Genting Americas. Investment: $830 million. Location: off Interstate 84, in Montgomery. A second, smaller bid from Genting, which said this project would be a good fit if the siting board decided to place a casino closer to a distressed area. - The Live! Hotel and Casino, Orange County. By Cordish Companies and Penn National Gaming. Investment: $750 million. Location: South Blooming Grove. Applicant plans a 12-story hotel with more than 300 rooms and a gaming floor that would include 3,200 slot machines. - Hudson Valley Casino & Resort, Orange County. By Saratoga Casino and Raceway and Rush Street Gaming. Investment: $670 million. Location: Town of Newburgh. Would include a 300-room hotel that could be expanded. One of two applications from Saratoga Casino and Raceway, the other is for a casino near Albany. - Nevele Resort, Casino & Spa, Ulster County. By Nevele. Investment: $640 million. Location: Wawarsing, at site of old Nevele hotel. The now-shuttered grand old Nevele hotel has a distinctive 9-story round tower of rooms, which would be retained. The Nevele is about a half-hour drive from the other two Catskills contenders. - Mohegan Sun at The Concord, Sullivan County. By Concord Kiamesha LLC and Mohegan Gaming NY. Investment: $550 million. Location: Thompson, on the grounds of the old Concord hotel. Application promised a 252-room hotel and 52,000-square-foot gaming hall. The tribe owns and operates casinos in neighboring Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Developer Louis Cappelli also is involved in the bid. - Grand Hudson Resort & Casino, Orange County. By Greenetrack. Investment: $400 million. Location: New Windsor, near Stewart International Airport. Applicant plans for 3,000 slot machines and 100 table games and says airport site already has much of the needed infrastructure in place. ___ ALBANY-SARATOGA: This region has mid-sized proposals and could face competition from casinos planned for Massachusetts. - Howe Caverns Resort & Casino, Schoharie County. By Howe Caves Development. Investment: $330 million to $450 million. Location: on the site of Howe Caverns, a show cave and tourist attraction.
