BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Record setting numbers. Revenues from Maryland casinos reached a new monthly record in August, topping $80 million for the first time.
Rick Ritter explains a large part of that is the Horseshoe Casino, which generated nearly $6 million in just days.
Just to give you an idea of how impressive that is–Horseshoe pulled in more money in its first six days open than some casinos in Maryland did the entire month.
It only took six days for the Horseshoe Casino to cash in on a major payday.
“We’ve had fantastic volumes. Just what we expected,” said Noah Hirsch, vice president of marketing, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore.
Fantastic, to say the least. New numbers show the casino pulled in $5.7 million from its slots and table games in just six days in August.
“I was surprised by how many people were playing the slots and how crowded it was,” said Mike Powell.
Horseshoe’s revenue put Maryland casinos over $80 million in August for the first time ever.
“As the demand in the overall Maryland market continues to grow, we’re very excited about that,” said Hirsch.
Where’s that money go? The state collects 20 percent on table games and 61 percent of the casinos’ earnings on slots. The city of Baltimore gets three percent of the revenues for leasing city-owned land.
“I think it’s beautiful in there. I thought I was in Las Vegas,” said Correne Holloway.
With the grand opening of its Asian gaming room Saturday and Ravens football just hours away from kicking off at neighboring M&T Bank Stadium, Horseshoe officials say their luck is just warming up.
“We’re very encouraged that there’s definitely a demand for the product that we have,” Hirsch said.
Horseshoe officials say 15,000 people were at the casino on opening night and more than 50,000 people were there over Labor Day weekend.
Despite the added competition, August revenue at Maryland Live, the state’s largest casino, rose 7.4 percent.
