HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) – Pennsylvania casinos notched an increase in gross revenue from slot machines in 2012, but it was also another year the Commonwealth added at least one new casino. (see related story)
In the year gone by, Pennsylvania casinos had $2.47 billion dollars of gross revenue from slots. That’s an increase of 2.7 percent from the previous year.
But Doug Harbach, spokesman for the Gaming Control Board, says the increase is only a bit more than one-percent if you only compare the casinos that were open in 2011.
“Growth in Pennsylvania has a lot to do with the fact that we’re still expanding the casino market. We have 11 open – we opened the 11th this past year – and that contributed to some of this revenue rise,” says Harbach.
That newest casino, in Valley Forge, is a smaller “resort” facility. Pennsylvania’s second resort class casino, at Nemacolin in Fayette County, is expected to open later this year.
And the gaming board will hold hearings this year on a second casino for Philadelphia.
