ST. REGIS INDIAN RESERVATION, N.Y. — Authorities have raided what they say is an illegal Indian casino in northern New York, arresting three of the operators.
They tell the Plattsburgh Press-Republican (http://bit.ly/ZL550H) that state and federal officers went to the Three Feathers Casino on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to shut it down.
The men are charged in federal indictments with unlawful possession of gaming devices and unlawful possession and transportation of a gaming device on Indian territory.
A lawyer for one of the men says the arrests violate a treaty forbidding action against residents on an Indian territory without first involving tribal authorities.
The casino isn't sanctioned by the St. Regis council, which operates the Akwesasne (og-wuh-SAHZ'-nee) Mohawk Casino and Mohawk Bingo Palace under federal authority.
