Hundreds of job seekers are being herded through the sprawling Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont this morning for a meet and greet with the management team of Des Plaines new Rivers Casino.
In the first 45 minutes, 1,200 people were processed, with 600 more waiting in line, casino officials said. Thousands more are expected to flock to the
Casino developer Midwest Gamings first job information fair will end at 4 p.m. today at the convention center, 5555 N. River Road.
I had been planning on applying ever since theyve been talking about building, said Tom Warman of Des Plaines, who began waiting at 6 a.m.
Warman, 62, works part-time jobs as a substitute teacher at Maine East and West high schools and at a local auto parts store. He said he hopes to become a cashier for the casino.
The growing crowd is a sign of where the economy really is, said Newton Long of Des Plaines.
I found out about this last night so first thing this morning was a priority to get here, he said, I had no idea thered be this many people this early.
Nick F. Infelise of Rolling Meadows, a retired Cook County sheriffs deputy, said he got tired of his wifes honey-do list and is itching to get back to work.
Im looking for a nice company to work for. Im a people person and I feel I will be a plus with my security experience for the Rivers Casino, said the 56-year-old.
Organizers are expecting an estimated 10,000 people to attend the fair to find out more about the roughly 1,000 coveted jobs, including management positions, dealers and restaurant personnel.
In groups, applicants made their way from a waiting room where they were shown a 7-minute video presentation about the casino into an area where they could meet the management team.
Lawrence Martin of Schaumburg, whos been out of work for a year and a half, said the job market has been tough. Martin joined job clubs at area churches and has been working with the Barrington Career Center without much luck finding employment. Yet, he hasnt given up hope.
When theres an opportunity, I always find this energy, he said. Heres an opportunity for several hundred people. Why cant I be one?
Martin hopes to secure a human resources job with the casino.
The early crowd excitement dimmed a little as fair organizers repeatedly reminded that no applications would be accepted on-site. Job seekers were asked to visit the website riverscasino.net to apply.
With as many thousands of people that potentially could be there, it really is the most efficient way, said Merrick Dresnin, Rivers Casino vice president of human resources. Weve already exceeded 3,000 applications on that website. Obviously, after (today) thats going to go up tremendously.
Interested applicants who dont have home computers should go to area libraries or to the Illinois Department of Employment Securitys local job centers, Dresnin said.
This is an opportunity for us to get to meet the applicant pool and an opportunity for the community to get to meet us, Dresnin said. Were looking for top people who want to deliver the best in guest service. Certainly, we anticipate applicants locally, from all over Chicagoland and possibly beyond. Its a very exciting time and thats what we want to share (today).
Des Plaines Mayor Marty Moylan urged unemployed city residents to apply.
If we didnt have a casino, we wouldnt have this opportunity, he said.
The $445 million Rivers Casino will house 1,200 gambling positions and several restaurants and bars, including Hugos Frog Bar and Chop House.
The casino, under construction on about 20 acres off Des Plaines River Road between Touhy and Devon avenues, is on the south side of the city in the 6th Ward. It is expected to generate millions in annual gambling tax revenues for the state, city and area communities.
Its great that Rivers Casino is going to be giving back putting this many people to work, what a great thing to be part of, Dresnin said.
To be eligible for employment at the Rivers Casino, applicants are required to apply for and obtain an Illinois gaming license. For that, applicants must undergo a general background check, fingerprinting, and must not have a felony conviction. Failure to disclose any information or refusal of any part of the process would immediately disqualify the applicant.
