Casino problems not city manager's fault - Port Huron Times Herald

E-mail Print PDF

Let's get started, shall we?

Talk to me:

? No Name: "I see Port Huron was shot down again regarding a casino. I think they ought to get a different city manager and get something going. There's no reason at all why they shouldn't have a casino in Port Huron. I still would like to see them get a casino."

Bruce Brown isn't the problem with Port Huron's casino bid.

Legalized gambling in Michigan is far more complicated. The Bay Mills Community of Indians' casino in Vanderbilt was a test for expanding gambling facilities in Michigan -- especially Port Huron. The federal injunction is nothing the city of Port Huron could have changed. Bay Mills is running this show, and the good news is Bay Mills isn't giving up.

? Joan from Port Huron: "What a waste of taxpayer money to put out fancy driver's licenses. The license is fine just the way it is. It fits in my wallet slot. We don't need holograms. We need some common sense."

? Jeanne from Port Huron: "In response to No Name from Port Huron about smoking cigars when his children are in the car: Eeeew! I can't believe it! At least I have the courage to give my name, but you don't. You're killing your children. Wake up."

You tell 'em, Jeanne.

? Sheri J. Faust Environmental Educator, St. Clair County Health Department: "A caller asked where to buy a rain barrel. The St. Clair County Health Department sold rain barrels last summer, and this year, we are taking names again to arrange another pre-pay, pre-order for them. People interested in a rain barrel for $50 can call the St. Clair County Health Department's Environmental Health Division: (810) 987-5306."

? George from the Township: "I've been on both sides of the fence, manager and worker. You can tell who has the better lobbyists in the government. It surely is not the union, it is surely not labor. It is surely the rich businessman. Ask Michigan, ask Ohio, ask Wisconsin, ask New Hampshire. Workers of America, it is time to stand up. The time to strike is now."

? A Concerned Citizen: "I live at 23rd and Chestnut streets in Port Huron. I've called the city police many times, but I get no response or a patrol car out here. There are so many high school kids flying down 23rd Street despite all the potholes everyone knows are a mess. I'm afraid of what might happen once the city redoes this street. The kids fly through all these yield signs as if they don't even exist. We have a day care house in this area. We also have Roosevelt School. They're probably going 40-50 mph. A patrol car parked here on Chestnut could make so much money for the city in handing out traffic tickets to these kids who need to learn how to drive."

? Tracy from Port Huron: "In response to Kathy from Fort Gratiot who received a pamphlet in the mail about the millage vote May 3: I hope she left a message for the superintendent. I can see if she called for three days straight and he didn't return her call, but because you called once and he wasn't at his desk. He is the superintendent of schools and I would assume that he's probably in meetings or going to different schools, etc. I wanted her to know that her tax money didn't pay for these pamphlets. All the stuff that's being done to promote this bond issue is from donations. None of the schools' money can be used on this and people don't understand this. I hope she read the pamphlet she received. There are meetings coming up where she could see that all this money is being donated to push this. No school funds can be used to promote this bond issue. I am just a school district parent. I am going to assume Kathy probably is a senior citizen. If you go on the PHASD website there's a tax calculator there. You can put in exactly how much you make and what your house is worth and it will spit out exactly what you'll pay extra in taxes. Most people are going to pay under $25 and most senior citizens won't pay a dime."

The school district's website is www. port-huron.k12.mi.us.
