New York authorities have suspended the driver's license of the bus driver at the wheel of a tour bus that crashed Saturday in the Bronx as it carried gamblers from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville back to New York City.
Fifteen of 32 passengers aboard the bus died as a result of the crash. The investigation into that crash by local, state and federal authorities continues.
The move came Thursday as New York Department of Motor Vehicle officials turned over to state police and the state inspector general evidence of false statements the driver, Ophadell Williams.
"The information the DMV is referring for investigation includes driver license applications containing false statements about the status of his license and whether this was done to conceal the fact that he had been using multiple names and had a suspension under one of those names," said Howard Glaser, the director of state operations in New York. "The investigation is active and ongoing."
In the meantime, New York authorities have begun targeting tour buses. State troopers and New York Department of Transportation inspectors working special details will focus on tour bus inspections at various locations. On Thursday, officials said they inspected 36 buses and took 10 drivers out of service during roadside inspections.
