The Sahara Hotel and Casino -- where Johnny Carson performed sold-out shows and the Beatles once stayed -- will be shuttered, marking a milestone in Las Vegas's ongoing recession as the first casino on the once-booming Las Vegas Strip to close during the recent downturn.

The 55-year old property will be shut in May because it is

losing money, its owner, SBE Entertainment Group, said Friday.

"While no final decisions have been made at this point, the continued operation of the aging Sahara was no longer economically viable," Sahara Chief Executive Sam Nazarian said in a statement.
