THE restaurant precinct in the $860 million redevelopment of Star City will include the popular Sydney Chinese eatery, Golden Century, as well as a list of international chefs.
Leasing agents for the new development have targeted well-known names to make the new-look area of the casino a destination for entertainment, without patrons having to
The directors of Star City are aiming to revamp the precinct to make it as attractive as Melbourne's Crown Casino, which has boutiques and restaurants outside the casino.
In the next few months the new retail tenants at Star City will be named, and it is anticipated that several upmarket fashion stores will be on the list too. Star City's managing director, Sid Vaikunta, told BusinessDay he wanted the new area to be a collection of stores and signature restaurants, rather than be considered a shopping mall.
Two international chefs that have already signed up are David Chang, head chef and owner of New York's Momofuku, and Chase Kojima, the former executive chef at Nobu in the Bahamas. Australians Teage Ezard, Stefano Manfredi and Adriano Zumbo are among the top chefs offering a variety of ''new culinary experiences'', Mr Vaikunta said.
As part of the redevelopment, the Star City complex will add a five-star boutique hotel; a 16-room spa; an entertainment and events centre; more than 20 restaurants, bars and cafes, and upgraded entertainment and gaming facilities.
There will also be new bars and a nightclub that can be entered separately from the casino.
The redevelopment, including the new restaurants and hotel, is expected to be completed by late this year.
Star City is owned by Tabcorp. Its chief executive of casinos, Larry Mullin, said the interest the project was generating among domestic and international partners, for restaurants, nightlife, retail and entertainment, was a sign of its potential.
