The event, which originally was scheduled to feature the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix but instead now features a pair of title fights, takes place at the 16,000-seat Valley View Casino
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed the venue for the Showtime-televised event, likely to be "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley," with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) overnight.
Strikeforce never previously has hosted an event in San Diego, though California has been a popular destination for the San Jose-based promotion.
As Coker told MMAjunkie.com on Tuesday, the April 9 event features a championship doubleheader: welterweight titleholder Nick Diaz (24-7 MMA, 5-0 SF) vs. Paul Daley (27-9-2 MMA, 2-0 SF) and lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez (18-2 MMA, 8-1 SF) vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri (27-6-2 MMA, 0-0 SF).
The second pair of opening-round matchups from the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix has been pushed back to June 18. The event, which takes place at Dallas' American Airlines Center, includes Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers. Gina Carano also is likely to return at the event.
