Competition is getting fierce in the Northeast when it comes to casino gambling, but that does not mean there is not enough revenue for all the states to

prosper. In January, Maryland's two slot casinos won over $10 million from gamblers.

The Casino at Ocean Downs and the Hollywood Casino each had decent showings in the first month of the new year. The Ocean Downs casino was only open since January 4th, but managed to bring in $3 million in revenue. The total revenue for the month averaged out to over $144 a day per machine.

The Hollywood Casino in Perryville is a little more established and had revenue of $7.7 million. Hollywood Casino has been open since September of last year, and averaged $165.96 in revenue a day for each of the 1,500 machines.

Maryland has a long way to go if they are going to catch up to the hundreds of millions of dollars that New Jersey casinos are bringing in. Pennsylvania casinos have also become gaming leaders on the East Coast, with lawmakers legalizing table games last summer. The table games have allowed Pennsylvania casinos to compete with Atlantic City for gaming supremacy.

The Northeast has become a hotbed for gamblers in recent years. In addition to Pennsylvania and Maryland, New York, Delaware, and Connecticut have all expanded their casino options. Massachusetts lawmakers have been discussing casino resort legislation for the past couple of years as well, but as of yet they have not passed the new law.

Maryland casinos come into the industry at a time when casinos are struggling all across the US. Las Vegas casinos are still attempting to recover from the economic recession, and analysts do not believe a full recovery inside the gaming industry will be felt until late in 2012.
