Alabama Governor Bob Riley said Monday that voters should be alarmed over the latest fallout from the state’s bingo raids.
The Alabama governor spoke following the indictment of eleven people accused of trying to corrupt the legislative process. Federal authorities rounded up 11 people Monday, including four state senators and two casino operators.
"Anytime you have organized gambling that has that amount of money and the ability to use that money in the way they evidently they did, it should be frightening to everyone in the state," said Mr. Riley.
The issue has taken front and center stage in the race for governor of the state, with both candidates weighing in. The Democratic nominee for Alabama governor, Ron Sparks, says the timing of the gambling indictments a month before the election is suspicious and must be questioned.
Earlier this year, state lawmakers attempted to pass a bill allowing voters to decide on whether the state should allow for casinos.
