For years, travelers have come to Maine to enjoy winter activities such as snowboarding and skiing. In 2011, tourists will be coming for something else, a new casino that is being built in Oxford County.

On Tuesday, a chair derailed at the Sugarloaf Mountain ski resort, leaving seven people injured. The extent of the injuries were not revealed, but a release by the ski resort claims that all of the injured people have been transported off the mountain. Accidents like this are nothing new to ski resorts, with several ski lifts malfunctioning in recent years.
Hundreds of vacationers were removed from the mountain after the accident, although Sugarloaf claims they will run normal operations for the rest of the week, excluding the area where the ski left was broken. Investigators are looking into the cause for the malfunction.
As for the casino plans, they were in question when an opposition group asked for a recount of the mid-term election vote that gave approval for the location of the casino. That recount ended after the group realized the vote would not go in their favor. The margin of victory for the casino was less than one percent.
Black Bear Entertainment is now pushing forward with their plans to build the casino. The company continued to work on the process while the recount was taking place, and now comes the permit and regulatory work that needs to be done prior to construction. Once complete, the Oxford casino will join many other new casinos throughout the Northeast,
