Eastern Shawnee Chief Glenna Wallace announced plans Tuesday for a sprawling new casino to be built near the junction of U.S. 60 and Business Highway 60, not far from the tribe’s existing facility near Seneca at the Missouri and Oklahoma borders.
Speaking before a crowd of approximately 100 tribal officials, employees, citizens, business partners and various news media, chrome
The announcement came after a ceremonial smoking of the grounds and individuals who will be associated with the project. The chief explained that the smoke, which is partially derived from the burning of cedar, carries the prayers to the Creator who was called upon to bless the massive undertaking.
Red Stone Construction Services, LLC has been selected as general contractor for the new Bordertown Casino project.
Wallace related the decision to build the new casino to a speech given once by President John F. Kennedy, a man she admired.
“Mr. Kennedy was talking about the Chinese symbol for the word ‘fear’,” she explained to the assembly. “He stated the symbol was created with two brush strokes, one defining ‘fear’ and the other ‘opportunity’. Some may wonder why we have chosen to build in an economy many would consider dangerous, but we are preparing for the future of our tribal citizens as an opportunity. Interest rates are lower than they have ever been and construction costs are lower than they have been in years.
“In 2003, we thought that we had built the last casino in Ottawa County. But this is 2010. Other tribes have stepped up to the plate and issued a challenge. So we are embarking on a new adventure, providing jobs for many in our area during the construction phase plus a large number of jobs afterwards.”
At a luncheon following the groundbreaking event, the crowd admired an artist’s rendering of the proposed facility. The theme appeared to be a lodge design.
