MONTICELLO, N.Y. — Gov. David Paterson has announced a land claim settlement with a Wisconsin tribe that could lead to a long-awaited Indian casino in the Catskills — though the deal faces federal scrutiny and likely legal challenges.

Paterson says the deal announced Monday in central New York's Madison County settles a

long-running land claim by the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohicans of Wisconsin. He says the tribe will end its claim to 23,000 acres in the county, while getting 330 acres in Sullivan County, where the tribe wants to build a casino within day-tripping distance of the lucrative New York City market.

Paterson planned a separate announcement Monday afternoon in the Catskills.

The deal must be considered by the federal Department of Interior. And it could face legal challenges from environmental groups or other Indian tribes.
