Border town Port Huron ought to have a casino - Port Huron Times Herald

Reading Mike Connell's two articles about the history of trying to get a casino in Port Huron brings to mind additional comments from this reader and supporter of a Port Huron casino. The city, an international border crossing, does not have a casino similar to Detroit/Windsor, Niagara/ Buffalo or Sault Ste. Marie.

Look what happened in the southwest corner of Michigan: In the past few years, three casinos have opened, yet Port Huron is suffering with high unemployment that could be reduced by employment in a casino. When I visited casinos, I observed about 70% of the patrons are senior citizens who support the casinos playing slots and a day/night of dining and entertainment. Why drive to Detroit or Standish when the distance to Port Huron would only be 17 miles? If a casino were built, and the city receives 2% of the revenue, which could be $2 million, emergency services would be enhanced with additional firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel with no strain on the city budget. There's no reason why a fire company has only three firefighters when a minimum of four should be on duty. I know from personal experience that fire suppression and life saving can be more quickly given with that additional person on duty.JOSEPH J. ST. JOHNLexington, Nov. 9
