CATHEDRAL CITY >> A 41-year-old construction worker died Monday while working at the newly opened Agua Caliente Casino in Cathedral City, authorities said.
Jay Ayers of Temecula was fatally injured at 5:20 a.m. at the E. Palm Canyon Drive casino and died at the scene, according to Riverside County coroner’s officials.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death were not immediately clear.
“We received a call of an industrial accident on the Casino property resulting in the unfortunate death of an employee,” Cathedral City police Cmdr. Julio Luna said. “We are in the process of completing our investigation. Any further comments on the incident will come from the casino.”
The casino, which opened last week in time for Thanksgiving, is one of three owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in the Coachella Valley; the others are in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.
Casino or tribal representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.
The death will be investigated by the Cathedral City Police Department and the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Department of Workplace Safety, according to coroner’s officials.
