Everett casino to donate $10 million to social programs

Encore Boston Harbor, the $2.6 billion Wynn Resorts casino slated to open in Everett next June, has pledged $10 million to civic and social programs over the next four years in an effort to “help those in need and improve the lives of residents in local communities,” the company announced Tuesday.

Wynn Resorts, along with the Connors Family Office, will create a committee to identify programs that support at-risk youth education, cultural enrichment, and “vibrant communities.”

“It’s not in our corporate DNA to just write a check for a donation or buy a table at a charity event,” Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox said in a statement. “We want to make an impactful difference in the lives of people and effect real and positive changes in our communities.”

The $10 million commitment and the partnership with the Connors Family Office, a charitable organization led by local businessman Jack Connors Jr., “will go a long way towards realizing our goal,” Maddox said.

Connors said the $10 million initiative “is poised to make a real difference for some very worthy organizations.”

The announcement follows weeks of controversy for the company. Earlier this month, billionaire Steve Wynn sued the company he founded and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, alleging that Wynn Resorts has improperly handed over privileged documents to the commission for its investigation into sexual misconduct claims against him.

Last week, a judge in Nevada temporarily blocked the Massachusetts Gaming Commission from releasing its investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against the former casino mogul.
