In the final days of his campaign for governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper on Saturday announced the death of his cousin, 47-year-old film director George Hickenlooper.

George Hickenlooper was found dead Saturday morning, apparently of natural causes. He was in Denver to attend the premiere of his latest film, Casino Jack, starring Kevin Spacey and Kelly Preston.

Among his

other films was one called 'Hick' Town, a documentary that followed his cousin at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. He was best known for Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalpyse, an Emmy-winning looking at Francis Ford Coppola and the troubled making of the film Apocalypse Now.

John Hickenlooper, a Democrat who is the mayor of Denver, is in the midst of a tight battle for governor against independent Tom Tancredo. Republican Dan Maes is also running.

"Shock and sadness do not begin to describe our emotions. We are devastated," the mayor was quoted as saying by the Denver Post.
