In South Dakota, according to a recent poll, residents have had enough gambling expansion. The poll commissioned by the Argus Leader and KELO-TV, shows that the majority of South Dakota residents do not want to bring additional casinos to the state. That is a blow to supporters who feel South Dakota needs more casinos to keep up.
"Iowa is expanding gambling, and so are several other states in our area," said casino support Martin Velky. "If voters do not realize the importance of bringing more casinos to South Dakota, the economy could get worse. The jobs and revenue new casinos would bring is essential in the state."
The poll asked 800 voters if they want casino expansion. Sixty-three percent said they do not want additional casinos built. The state already has tribal casinos. Almost thirty percent, however, were in favor of more gambling. That figure is still high enough to keep the debate going for the next couple of years.
South Dakota is not the only state where voters had a difficult time with the casino issue. In Ohio, residents turned away several casino proposals over the past decade, before finally approving four casinos last November. Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo will all receive casinos thanks to that vote.
South Dakota was one of the pioneers in casino gambling in the US. The state approved casino gambling and became just the third state to do so back in 1989. Nevada and New Jersey, both gaming capitals of the US were the other two states. In the years since, however, other states have caught up to and surpassed South Dakota in the casino industry.
