Jack Cleveland Casino's revenue down in July; Hard Rock Rocksino had best month ever

CLEVELAND, Ohio --Jack Cleveland Casino, which had difficulty drawing gamblers during the week of the Republican National Convention, saw revenues decline almost $1 million from June, according to the monthly report from the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

The $15.5 million in revenue for the casino was divided almost equally from table games and slot machines.

The casino encouraged gamblers to go to Jack ThistleDown Racino in North Randall, which saw a $1 million gain from June.

But the biggest beneficiary of those who stayed out of Cleveland may have been Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park, which saw its highest monthly revenue -- $20.6 million --  since opening in December 2013.

Revenue from that racino, and strong showings from the six other racinos, led to a statewide revenue of $80 million the highest ever for the Ohio Lottery Commission.

Statewide casino revenue for July was $66 million. Revenue at the casinos in Toledo, Columbus and Cincinnati increased from June to July.

The state commissions define revenue as the money left after casinos and racinos pay winners and deduct for promotions.

Jack Casino is expecting to rebound, not only after the RNC but months of road restrictions in and around Public Square due to the square's renovation, road construction and movie filming, said Mark Tricano, senior vice president of operations.

Jack Casino Cleveland's business suffered during convention

"The past several months have certainly not been without its challenges," he said.

He said he could not comment specifically on Hard Rock's revenues. He said the Northeast Ohio gambling market is only so large, but it is growing.

"As we continue to look to the future we are optimistic we will get our fair share of the growth," he said of the casino and ThistleDown.

Slot revenue at the casino has been declining. July's revenue of $7.7 million was 24 percent less than a year ago and about half of the casino's highest slot revenues of $13 million and $14 million in the spring of 2014.

"A lot has impacted our business and we will see that slot revenue stabilize in pretty short order and start to see those results continue to improve," Tricano said.

The Cleveland casino has a slightly higher payout for slots than the other three casinos.

Casino and racino officials have said year-over-year comparisons typically provide a more accurate reflection of performance than comparing one month to the previous one.

Jack Entertainment, formerly Rock Gaming, owns the casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati and Jack ThistleDown Racino.

Hard Rock Rocksino is a joint venture between Hard Rock International and Northfield Park.

Penn National Gaming owns the Hollywood casinos in Columbus and Toledo and the racinos near Youngstown and Dayton.
