A proposed hotel-casino development off the Mount Rose Highway was given a five-year extension by the Reno City Council on Wednesday to start building.

Council members debated whether to grant such a lengthy extension. The project already was granted one-years extension since it was approved on Nov. 15, 2006.
But in the end, Councilman Dwight Dortch and others said they dont expect the project to get started in the next two years because of the poor economy.
And if they dont do phase one in five years, phase two goes away, Dortch said.
The 88-acre project comes with 42 conditions that remain in place over that time and go with the project if it is sold, city planner Vern Klos said.
Station Casinos Inc., of Las Vegas, the owner, has been in and out of bankruptcy since the project was approved.
And whenever the project is built, it will pay impact and other fees that are in effect when the building permits are obtained. Another provision tacks on 2 percent a year to a $900,000 sum to be turned over to the city to buy a fire ladder truck.
