EDMONTON — A woman shot outside the River Cree Casino on the Enoch reserve during a burst of gunfire that killed an Edmonton resident two years ago did not realize she had been hit with a bullet.

That was the testimony of Munira Omar during the murder trial for Adam Michael Brown, 23, and Alexander Edward Colin Reid, 22, in Court of Queen’s Bench on Tuesday.

“I didn’t feel pain, I

didn’t know I was shot. Subconsciously, I guess, my body was telling me to touch my side,” Omar told court.

When she touched her side, Omar felt blood, but she still didn’t realize she had been shot. Omar said she hadn’t heard any gunfire.

Brown and Reid are charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder for the incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 30, 2008. They have pleaded not guilty and their trial is expected to last two weeks.

They are accused of killing Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, 24, who died outside the casino’s Touch Ultra Lounge after he was also shot that night. The attempted murder charge is connected to the shooting of Omar.

Ibrahim had moved to Edmonton from the Toronto area about a year before.

Omar testified she had also arrived from Toronto, but only shortly before the deadly night. She had gone to the casino to celebrate a friend’s birthday and said she knew only a few people in the group taking part in the celebration.

Omar said shortly after she arrived at the lounge, a shoving match erupted between several groups. She and her sister-in-law went outside for a cigarette along with several others.

About three minutes later, the gunfire started. Omar was taken inside by friends. Paramedics found Ibrahim dead on the pavement outside the lounge, suffering from a gunshot to the back of the head.

The bullet that struck Omar lodged in her pelvic-area, but was not life-threatening.

Another witness has previously testified she saw a man dressed in black clothing running toward the parking lot after the shooting, but she could not provide a further description of the man.

The trial continues.
