Because the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem is closely monitored by surveillance cameras and security staff, attempts to steal
mislaid valuables from the casino floor are rarely successful.

But on Thursday and Friday, thieves made off with more than $1,500.

At 2 p.m. Thursday, an unidentified man took $1,400 worth of vouchers that casino patron Francis Chmiel of Egg Harbor, N.J., left on top of a slot machine, state police said.

The thief cashed out the vouchers and left the casino before the officers could get to him, police said.

At 3:50 p.m. Friday, a 91-year-old Easton woman left her purse containing $140 on a floor next to a slot machine, police said. Another thief picked up Josephine Berger's purse and left the casino, police said.

The purse thief was last seen walking on Third Street in Bethlehem, police said.

State police said they are investigating both thefts.
