Gov. John Kasich is looking into how to get casino operators in Ohio to pay more.
Gov. John Kasich says he isn't planning on pushing for changes to the tax rate or licensing fee for Ohio's four casinos, but insists they should pay more as they enter the market, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
The 33 percent tax rate and $50 million per-casino licensing fee are set by the Ohio constitutional amendment that voters approved in 2009. Kasich this week said “the taxpayers of Ohio got a bad deal,” adding a gambling consultant he's soon to hire will advise him on what additional fees the operators could pay, the paper reported.
Casino operators, who have expressed concern over Kasich's potential moves, say they're investing above and beyond what's set in the constitution in the four cities. Analysts say higher taxes and fees could mean smaller projects and fewer jobs created, the paper reported.
