RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. – Authorities have ordered evacuations for a New Mexico racetrack and casino and surrounding neighborhoods under threat of a rapidly growing grass fire.
State Forestry Division spokesman Dan Ware did not have a count for the number of people evacuated.
The wind-driven blaze started Sunday
The areas under evacuation orders are Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino, and neighborhoods north of U.S. 70 in the town. Residents five miles north and 10 miles east of the road's Y-intersection in Ruidoso have been asked to voluntarily leave.
The cause of the fire isn't known.
