Louisville-based racing and casino company Churchill Downs Inc. announced Monday that Chief Executive Officer Bob Evans will take on the additional role of board chairman when Carl Pollard retires in June.

Evans, 58, will be the fifth consecutive thoroughbred breeder to be chairman. He owns Tenlane

Farm in Woodford County. Chief Operating Officer Bill Carstanjen will take on the additional role of president. The changes are to take effect June 16, when the company holds its annual meeting. The changes represent a departure in leadership structure from the company, which has had a separate chairman and CEO since at least 1949, the year that Matt Winn died. In his new role, Carstanjen will oversee all Churchill business segments and report to Evans. Previously, the companys online operations were overseen by a vice president who reported to Evans. That VP, Rohit Thukral, has reported to Evans and now will report to Carstanjen. The board term for Pollard, 72, is up this year. In 2009, Churchills board adopted rules that would allow directors older than 70 to seek a new term and waive a a mandatory retirement rule. But I elected for them not to waive it, Pollard said in a telephone interview. The Churchill board also appointed current director G. Watts Humphrey Jr. as lead independent director of the board.Pollard, who has been on the board since 1985, said the companys diversification makes it well positioned for the future. A daily regular when racing is conducted at the Central Avenue track, Pollard said he plans to keep my perfect attendance pin intact.Reporter Gregory A. Hall can be reached at (502) 582-4087.
