A federal magistrate judge has banned a civilian employee of the Navy accused in a million-dollar kickback scheme from gambling as a condition of bail.

The move comes after prosecutors found that, since his arrest in January, Ralph Mariano has won more than

$100,000 playing slot machines at a Rhode Island casino.

Magistrate Judge Lincoln Almond said his basis for the decision was a concern that gambling losses might diminish the amount in restitution Mariano could pay if found guilty. Lawyers for Mariano did not oppose the decision.

Mariano appeared in U.S. District Court in Providence on Monday on a separate bail issue that proved to be a minor misunderstanding. He remains free on $50,000 unsecured bond, with his condominium posted as secured bond.
