Las Vegas Sahara Hotel and Casino to Close - Sports Interaction

Chalk up another dead soldier on the Vegas Strip as it was just announced that the Sahara Hotel and Casino, one of the older and more affordable Strip casino hotels, would be closing for good on May 16, 2011.

While the entire city of Las Vegas is feeling the pinch of the long, drawn out economic recession, the

hotels and casino on the north side of the Strip have been hit particularly hard with the New Frontier being demolished in 2007 and the Echelon Project stalled. Last year the never quite completed Riviera Hotel and Casino auctioned off its furnishings and then went on to file for bankruptcy.

The Sahara offered a cheap place to stay in a pinch, and for those of us who have spent enough time in Vegas, it’s a known fact that sometimes, that’s exactly the kind of hotel you want.

The 49-year-old casino and hotel has 1,720 rooms and a good sized casino floor space at 85,000 square feet. A hotel/casino of the everyman, it boasts two main restaurants: the NASCAR Café with its famous six-pound burrito (you will be missed my friend) and the House of Lords Steakhouse.

The closure means that approximately 1,000 more people will be looking for work in the hard hit Sin City. Fortunately the casino’s partners are looking for jobs for as many as possible in other hotels and casinos along the Strip.

CEO of SBE Entertainment Group, Sam Nazarian, suggested the possibility that we might someday see the return of the Sahara Casino and its rare and wonderful on-Strip $5 Blackjack tables.

“We are working with our partners to assess a variety of options for the property, including a complete renovation and repositioning,” Nazarian said. “While no final decisions have been made at this point, the continued operation of the aging Sahara was no longer economically viable.”

The final demise of the Sahara Hotel and Casino has been a long time coming as two years ago it saw the first signs of its end when it was required to close two of its three hotel towers as well as its buffet. And as everyone knows, a Vegas hotel without a buffet is not long for this world.

For instant access to casino games of your choice, at the stakes you’re looking for, check out the Sports Interaction online casino. There may not be any six-pound burritos but we promise the gaming will be top-notch.
